Fishing enthusiasts visiting or frequenting Puget Sound in Washington state have a variety of species to choose from. In fact, the area is home to more than 200 species of large marine fish. In addition to various species of salmon, steelhead, and herring, as well as numerous rockfish species, Puget Sound is a habitat for various groundfish species, including Pacific cod and spiny dogfish. Some of the largest game fish in the sound are halibut.

In 2018, Whidbey Island native Tom Hellinger caught what may be an all-time record for the region. With the help of fishing partner Luke Reid and his son and daughter, Hellinger reeled in a 79-inch, 260-pound halibut. The Washington State record for a halibut is 288 pounds, but that fish was caught in open waters off of the Pacific coast. Hellinger’s fish did not surface for 40 minutes and dove back into the water for another lengthy battle before Hellinger finally brought the fish in for official measurement.
